Message Of The President

For over 40 years, NANSO has stood as a pillar of student representation and advocacy in Namibia, a movement shaped by its proud history, grounded in the aspirations of its members, and committed to building a just, inclusive, and transformative education system. Since our founding in 1984, we have consistently worked to amplify the voices of learners and students across all regions of our country, from the most remote rural schools to our major universities and vocational centres.

Today, we represent one of the largest student movements in Namibia, with a diverse and engaged membership spanning the entire education spectrum. This broad base is not only a reflection of our democratic character, but a source of strength as we continue to carry forward our mission of educational and social justice.

As an organization, we firmly believe that the right to education must be fully realized, not only as a constitutional principle, but as a practical reality. That begins with guaranteeing access to quality basic education for every child, regardless of geography, income, or ability. We are deeply concerned that thousands of learners continue to face barriers such as overcrowded classrooms, under-resourced schools, and limited teaching capacity. These challenges must be addressed with urgency, commitment, and targeted national investment.

At the tertiary level, we are encouraged by the initial steps taken toward implementing our long-standing call for free tertiary education, as captured in our Resolution 16. The expansion of government support through initiatives such as registration fee coverage and NSFAF reforms is a positive and welcomed development. However, these gains must be sustained, broadened, and institutionalized to ensure that no student is left behind on account of financial need. For us, access must be accompanied by inclusion, quality, and continuity.

In an ever-evolving global landscape, we are also called to reimagine education for the future. NANSO continues to lead the national conversation on digital inclusion, advocating for access to devices, connectivity, and digital literacy for all students, learners, trainees and teachers. In a world shaped by rapid technological advancement, it is imperative that the Namibian education system evolves accordingly, ensuring that all learners, especially in underserved communities, are equipped to thrive in the digital age.

NANSO remains firm in its advocacy for inclusive and accessible education for students living with disabilities. An equitable education system must be responsive to the needs of all students, not only in policy, but in practice. This includes the transformation of infrastructure, learning materials, and institutional culture across our schools and campuses.

Equally pressing is the rising cost of student living. The affordability of student accommodation, access to nutritious meals, transport, and mental health services directly impacts academic success. It is our view that national policy must urgently address the socioeconomic conditions of students, particularly in urban centres where housing costs are increasingly prohibitive. This, too, is a matter of educational access and human dignity.

Our resolutions, as adopted at our 18th National Congress serve as our blueprint for action. They are informed by the lived experiences of learners and students across Namibia and speak directly to the structural reforms we seek. These include Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, environmental sustainability efforts in our schools, professional development of TVET, student accommodation, decolonizing our education system, enhancing institutional accountability, and expanding democratic participation in decision-making processes affecting young people.
Namibia is a young nation, and its future lies in the hands of its youth. With over 70% of the population under the age of 35, young people are not just the beneficiaries of policy, we are critical stakeholders in shaping it. We believe that youth engagement, student voices, and grassroots organizing must be placed at the centre of national development.

Under my leadership, NANSO remains committed to being a thoughtful, principled, and progressive partner in the advancement of education in Namibia. We will continue to engage government, institutions, and civil society, not only with courage and clarity, but with a deep sense of national duty.

To this end, watch us fearlessly Mobilize, Advocate and Transform!
